(Day 31)
The medicine against being anxious
about life is to TRUST IN GOD.
Jesus mentioned this during the
Sermon on the Mount:
(Matthew 6:25-32) Therefore I tell you, do not
be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about
your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more
than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor
gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more
value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his
span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the
field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon
in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the
grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven,
will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be
anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall
we wear?' For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly
Father knows that you need them all.
Does this mean that we should sit and
do nothing, but wait with our arms crossed? Certainly not! The Lord calls us to
seek after our responsibility (that is, to seek for His Kingdom), and after
that, work on our responsibility (that is, to do righteousness). We must work
on our part, and God will carry out his.
(Matthew 6:33) But seek
first the kingdom
of God and his
righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
We know that doing this requires
FAITH. But, isn’t that what God expects from us?
(Matthew 6:34) Therefore do not be anxious
about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day
is its own trouble.
The key is in the phrase “do not to
worry”, “do not to be anxious”. Jesus repeats this same concept four times during
this sermon.
In the dictionary we see the noun “worry” defined as: “mental distress or
agitation resulting from concern, usually for something impending or
anticipated.” According to this definition, worry depends on circumstances. But
Jesus teaches us to rise above circumstances.
You may wonder: How could I not worry
when I am facing negative circumstances? Jesus gives us the answer: Trust in
God. This does not mean we should have a “blind faith”, and believe in anything
we set our mind to. It means we should have faith in that which God said. We
are going to be able to trust in God only after we have searched for His will.
“Trusting in God” is not waiting for
him to do everything for us, while we sit around with our arms crossed.
Trusting implies knowing God’s Will and walking in it. God expect us to do our
part, and he will do his. This is what “seeking the kingdom of God
and his righteousness” means.
We should not put our trust in
ourselves but in God, knowing that He is good and righteous, and he has
everything under control.
(Hebrews 11:6) And without faith it is
impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that
he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
God doesn’t want us to merely know
that he is good; he wants us to experience it. As the psalmist said: “taste and see…” (Psalms
34:8).
Today we will be praying Psalms
34:4-10…
PRAYER
I sought the LORD, and he answered me
and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant, and
their faces shall never be ashamed. This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him
and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the LORD encamps around
those who fear him, and delivers them. Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Oh, fear the LORD, you his saints,
for those who fear him have no lack! The young lions suffer want and hunger;
but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.
