THE TREASURE OF YOUR HEART

(Day 28)

Wealth is one of the main motivators in the world. Many people live to attain wealth. The main reason is the assurance that money provides security. Most people put their trust in it, because they think that money can buy anything. This is a prevalent thought that has infiltrated into the church, but it certainly doesn’t come from God. In the Kingdom of God we are taught the exact opposite. Jesus talked about this during his Sermon on the Mount.
(Matthew 6:19-21)  Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Where is our heart? What things do we regard as important in our lives? Where do we invest most of our time and attention? The answers we give to these questions will reveal which is our treasure.

The Lord encourages us to invest our time and resources into that which is eternal. That which is transient will be ruined and fade away, but that which is eternal will last forever.

THE LIGHT OF THE EYE
When referring to the treasures of the heart, Jesus gave the following message:
(Matthew 6:22-23)  The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

Light of the Eye
What is the relation between the message of the treasure of the heart and the eye being the lamp of the body? At plain sight it does not seem to have any relation whatsoever. But Jesus did not mention this by chance or by mistake. Just as we put our heart where our treasure is, we also put our sight on that which we consider important.
(2 Corinthians 4:16-18)  So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

What are we looking at, both physically and spiritually? If we have our eyes set on that which is good, we will have light. But if our eyes are set on that which is evil, our life will be filled with darkness.
(Ephesians 5:5-13)  For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light.

PRAYER
Lord, I don’t want to set my heart on the things of this world. I want to lay up for myself treasures in Heaven, where they will last forever. I don’t want to be guided by my eyes or the desires of this world anymore. Instead, I want to set my eyes on what is important and eternal – in Your Light and Your Truth.

Lord, I no longer want to walk as the Gentiles, in the futility of their minds, darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to the hardness of heart. Instead, I want to set my mind on things that are above, in the treasures of the Kingdom of Heaven, not in things that are on earth. Help me, Lord, to distinguish between them.
