(Day 19)
Jesus also compared those who follow
Him and practice the Beatitudes with the “Light”.
(Matthew 5:14) You are
the light of the world…
Light of the World |
LIGHT AMONG DARKNESS
A good attitude and conduct bring
light to a society that is used to the darkness of immorality and corruption.
(Philippians 2:15) that you
may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of
a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.
(Proverbs 4:19) The way of
the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble.
On the other hand, the way of the
righteous is light.
(Proverbs 4:11-18) I have
taught you the way of wisdom; I have led you in the paths of uprightness. When
you walk, your step will not be hampered, and if you run, you will not stumble.
Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life. Do
not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of the evil. Avoid
it; do not go on it; turn away from it and pass on. For they cannot sleep
unless they have done wrong; they are robbed of sleep unless they have made
someone stumble. For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of
violence. But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines
brighter and brighter until full day.
After being justified by faith in
Jesus Christ, we begin to walk the path of holiness. We cannot achieve holiness
from one day to the next; rather, it should be our goal. The light of the
righteous must shine brighter and brighter until it reflects the Light of God
in our lives.
DON’T TURN OFF THE LIGHT
To illuminate a large room with
candles, they must be placed on high. But if you hide the candles in a box,
their flame will extinguish. That is why Jesus said:
(Matthew 5:14-16) You are
the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people
light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to
all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that
they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
The truth that Jesus shines in our
hearts when we come to know him, must be later reflected in our lives. This
light comes from living as God commands, and by following Jesus’ example. This
is the light that we shine when we live our lives according to the Beatitudes.
Not everyone will accept this Light.
Some will reject it, so that their evil deeds may not be exposed (John
3:19-21). But the light of a good testimony will reach those who
desire for their lives that which is good. They will see God trough our good
works and will believe in Him.
Just as the flame of a lamp is
extinguished when it is placed under a basket, the flame of the Holy Spirit in
us is extinguished if we do not let it shine. We shine his light when we live
according to the rules of the Kingdom and practice the truth that the Spirit
has written in our hearts.
PRAYER
Lord, at one time I was in darkness,
but You brought light to my life. Now, I want to walk as a Child of Light. I am
no longer a part of this world, but part of a chosen race, a royal priesthood,
a holy nation, a people for your own possession, so that I may proclaim the
excellencies of Him who called me out of darkness into His marvelous light.
I want to shine your light in my
life, my actions and my attitudes, and attract others to you, just as moths are
attracted to light. I want to keep my conduct honorable, so that others may see
my good deeds and glorify You, Lord, on the day of visitation. Amen.
[Ephesians 5:8; 1 Peter 2:9,12]
